Lone Star Park suspended racing following Race 1 on Sunday, July 5, and canceled the remaining eight races on the card. The Texas track, 14 miles east of Dallas in Grand Prairie, made the announcement on Twitter.
Lone Star Park was scheduled to continue racing on Monday, July 6. The track reopened for live thoroughbred racing May 22 and was scheduled to resume racing through Aug. 11. Lone Star Park allowed limited spectators on site starting June 7 with face coverings and safety protocols in place.
But a spike in COVID-19 cases in Texas has led to more mandates including the July 2 governor’s order to require face coverings in selected counties where positive coronavirus cases have reached at least 20.
Track officials have not yet made any additional comments regarding the shutdown. However, Texas reported a record daily increase of more than 8,200 confirmed coronavirus cases Saturday, July 4.
